What is UV?

UV is a type of electromagnetic radiation having wavelengths shorter than visible light, typically 100-400nm. It is called ultraviolet (UV) as it borders the violet range of visible light, and is classified into three categories (UV-C, UV-B, and UV-A) according to the wavelength range of the radiation.

Features of Nichia's UV LEDs

UV LEDs are LEDs that emit ultraviolet and are generally considered difficult to ensure reliability due to the high energy of UV. However, Nichia ensures the high reliability of its UV LEDs through integrated management of the entire process, from the wafer manufacturing to product shipment.
Nichia offers a full range of LEDs including UV-C, UV-B, and UV-A, allowing customers to choose the appropriate wavelength for specific applications and they are widely used for various purposes that utilize UV. In addition, the expansion of the LED portfolio to cover the main wavelengths emitted by UV mercury lamps is accelerating the transition to LED and the movement towards the realization of a mercury-free society.

UV-C LED (280nm)

A wavelength range equal to or less than 280nm is called UV-C. Although UV-C can be dangerous to the human body depending on the energy levels, it is widely used in disinfection applications due to its strong virucidal power.

UV-B LED (308nm)

The UV-B range encompasses wavelengths 280-315nm. Nichia expects that UV-B LEDs, such as its newly launched 308nm LEDs, will not only become an alternative technology to mercury lamps, but will also be used in agricultural applications and more.

UV-A LED (330-405nm)

The wavelength range of 315-405nm is called UV-A. Customers have been utilizing Nichia's wide range of UV-A LEDs, ranging from 330-405nm, for over 20 years, including applications where defects are not tolerated, such as UV curing for semiconductor manufacturing processes, inspection equipment and processes (i.e. counterfeit detection), and more.
