U.S. company acknowledges infringement of NICHIA patent.

Recently, NICHIA CORPORATION determined that LED-application products marketed by Optronics, Inc. (a U.S. LED marketing and distribution company) were purchased from Chinese manufacturers using Taiwanese White LEDs that infringe at least one of NICHIA's U.S. patents. NICHIA CORPORATION demanded that Optronics discontinue marketing the infringing products.

Optronics acknowledged patent infringement in April 2004, and agreed to stop marketing infringing products and to change to new products using non-infringing white LEDs. As Optronics promptly acknowledged patent infringement, this case did not amount to a legal dispute, and an early settlement was reached. Optronics also agreed to purchase NICHIA's white LEDs as non-infringing products. Thus, NICHIA will permit Optronics to use Nichia's labels on Optronics' new products, to show that the products incorporate Nichia's LEDs.

NICHIA CORPORATION gives serious consideration to the protection of its intellectual property and will vigorously enforce its rights against those who infringe its intellectual property in any country.
