Nichia Enforces Foundational Filament LED Patent in California Against Feit Electric

On January 13, 2020, Nichia Corporation ("Nichia") filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Feit Electric Co., Ltd. (“Feit”), a US-based manufacturer and distributor of LED lighting products. The filament LED patent at issue, Nichia’s U.S. Patent No. 9,752,734, is directed to an LED light bulb in which the LEDs are configured to resemble the appearance of a traditional incandescent bulb. In its complaint, Nichia accuses approximately 200 different Feit products of infringing one or more of 21 different patent claims.

Nichia filed its application for U.S. Patent No. 9,752,734 in 2005, following research that led to groundbreaking innovations in filament LED technology. Nichia’s record of innovation in many areas of LED manufacture and design, including in the filament LED field, is one of the reasons why Nichia has maintained its position as the world’s leading LED company.

With the increasing popularity of filament LED products in the United States, major manufacturers of lighting products, such as Feit, have entered into the filament lighting market without proper regard for the Nichia’s inventions. Thus, Nichia has initiated enforcement of its foundational filament LED patent to protect its valuable technology and to maintain fair competition in the marketplace.

Nichia seeks to protect its patents and other intellectual property rights, and takes actions against alleged infringers in any country where appropriate and necessary.
