Expanding the Applications of Hortisolis™ LEDs Beyond Artificial FarmsDemonstrated Reduction in Product Waste and Increased Sales in Retail Garden Centers
Tokushima, Japan – 18 August 2026: Nichia, the world's largest LED / Laser Diode manufacturer and inventor of the high-brightness blue and white LEDs, has confirmed a reduction in product waste and an increase in sales through a pilot test conducted in a retail garden center using lighting equipped with Nichia's Hortisolis™ for horticultural applications.
While Hortisolis™ LEDs have primarily been used in artificial farms, this pilot test has revealed new potential for its use as a lighting solution in retail garden centers.
In retail garden centers, insufficient access to natural sunlight can lead to reduced plant quality and increased product waste. This challenge is particularly significant in shopping mall stores, where a wide variety of plants must be maintained under limited lighting conditions, making it difficult to preserve plant quality while keeping them available for sale.
To address this issue, a full-spectrum lighting environment was created by combining Nichia's Hortisolis™, which incorporates wavelengths suitable for plant growth, with technology from LEDs-up, a Brazilian manufacturer of horticultural lighting. The resulting solution balances effective plant cultivation with ease of use as retail lighting, contributing to improvements for garden centers.

A 45-day pilot test conducted at Cobasi, one of Brazil's leading pet and garden retail chains, demonstrated that product waste resulting from quality deterioration was reduced to nearly zero. Furthermore, plant quality and vitality, including leaf firmness and coloration, were successfully maintained. Growth was even observed in some plants while they were displayed for sale. These improvements also led to increased sales.
Unlike conventional light for plant-growth, which often emit a purplish glow, Hortisolis™ closely resembles white light. This makes it easier to evaluate plant color and condition, while also making it well suited for retail lighting applications. In addition, different plant species require different light conditions for optimal growth. As a result, garden centers that offer a wide variety of plants need lighting that can support diverse plant types. Hortisolis™, which was selected for this project, is designed to meet these requirements as well.
The results of this pilot test confirmed that Hortisolis™ can help maintain plant quality, reduce product waste, and increase sales in retail garden centers.
Nichia will continue to develop innovative products that contribute to the realization of sustainable society.
