Nichia will Launch the "NVSU434A" Series of UV-B (308nm) and UV-A (330nm and 340nm) LEDs Achieving Industry-leading Efficiency and Optical Output
Tokushima, Japan – 28 September 2026: Nichia, the world's largest LED/Laser Diode manufacturer and inventor of the high-brightness blue and white LEDs, is scheduled to launch new UV-B (peak wavelength: 308nm) and UV-A LEDs (peak wavelengths: 330nm and 340nm) in January 2027. These new products offer industry-leading efficiency and optical output1.
Nichia has long been committed to the development and commercialization of UV-C LEDs as alternatives to mercury lamps, aiming to reduce environmental impact. Leveraging the crystal growth and device design technologies cultivated through its UV-C LED development efforts, Nichia has now successfully developed a new series of high-power UV LEDs in the 300nm wavelength range.
In recent years, the use of LEDs in the UV-B to short-wavelength UV-A range has expanded rapidly across a wide variety of applications, including curing, agriculture, and medical fields.
In particular, curing applications require the selection of wavelengths optimized for material characteristics as well as high-output light sources to achieve fast and uniform curing processes. In the agricultural field, growing interest in reducing pesticide use through UV-B LED-based pest and disease control technologies is driving demand for higher-output, higher-efficiency light sources.
Traditionally, mercury lamps have been the primary light source used in this wavelength range.
However, growing concerns about their environmental impact have accelerated the demand for practical UV LED alternatives. In response to these market needs, Nichia has developed 308nm and 330nm LEDs that deliver approximately twice the efficiency and three times the optical output of conventional products. In addition, Nichia has successfully developed a new UV-A LED with a peak wavelength of 340nm, a wavelength that has been highly requested for UV curing applications, further expanding its portfolio of products in the 300nm wavelength range.
Features:
・Industry-leading Efficiency1
Designed for operation at a rated current of 700mA, the NVSU434A series achieves wall-plug efficiencies of 8.2% at 308nm, 10.0% at 330nm, and 9.4% at 340nm. These values represent approximately twice the efficiency of previous products. This advancement promotes the replacement of mercury lamps with UV LEDs, helping to reduce environmental impact, as well as contributing to lower power consumption and reduced CO2 emissions.
・Industry-leading Output Power1
By doubling the rated current from 350mA to 700mA, the products deliver industry-leading output power: typical values of 280mW at 308nm, 330mW at 330nm, and 310mW at 340nm. This higher output contributes to improving performance and shorter processing times across a wide range of applications. It also enables more compact and lightweight equipment, helping optimize overall system design.
